Richard 'Jumbo' James
Owner & resident instructor Richard "Jumbo" James is a life long 4 wheel drive enthusiast who has been welcoming visitors to Wood Park Off-Road for over 20 years.
Richard was a finalist in the Land Rover Driver of the Year competition (1996) and has since participated in numerous 4x4 events including the famous Mille Rivieres in France which he describes as the "most exciting and scary offroading he's ever done", accompanied by his youngest daughter Olivia as navigator.
Richard is a member of the West Wales 4x4 Club and frequently participates in local 4x4 trials. He is also a member of 4x4 Response and uses his off-road skills to assist the local community in poor driving conditions when other vehicles may be unsuitable.

The Site
Our site in the rolling Pembrokeshire countryside and has been in the James family for four generations.
The 4x4 course at Wood Park has been designed by Jumbo who has used his expertise as a farmer, landowner, countryside manager and off-road instructor to create this custom-made training area.
We are sympathetic users of our land and we encourage our guests to respect the countryside and use it in a sustainable manner too.
The 4x4 off road course occupies 45 acres of woodland amongst on our 250 acre site. We also make use of other private sites to expand the range of terrain available.
We host individuals, groups and companies all year round, whatever the weather!
Terrain
The variety of terrain at Wood Park Off-Road provides suitable challenges for all drivers whatever their level of experience
Slippery
Mud
A variety of muddy slopes to slippery tracks where you can learn how to keep your vehicle going and in a straight line.
Tough
Rock
Our quarry provides the ideal location to learn how to navigate through sharp rocks and loose shale.
Challenging
Woodland
Our extensive woodland provides a wide range of additional hazards from trees and stumps. Learn how to avoid getting stuck and not pick up any damage.
Demanding
Water
A variety of driving locations with various levels of water. These can be attempted in many ways, learn the right and wrong ways.
Deceiving
Grass
Wet or dry grass can produce conditions suitable for beginners to advanced off road drivers.
Our Vehicles
At Wood Park Off-Road we currently operate:
- New Landrover 110 Defender County with new Puma 2.2 litre engine, 6 speed gearbox.
- Land Rover 110 Tdi 300 county Station Wagon - (holds a lot of people and gear)
- Land Rover 90 TDi with roll cage and hydraulic winch - (prepared to competition standard on Simex Extreme tyres)
Using your own vehicle
If you bring your own vehicle, our instructor will be alongside you in the passenger seat to instruct and talk you through the course. It's possible to construct courses and training programmes to suit any make of 4X4.
